2013 Annual Surveys

Each spring the Chicago Association of REALTORS® conducts a series of surveys to help us assess and evaluate member satisfaction and how we can serve you better. Following are summary results of our 2013 surveys and links to full results. Thanks to all who took the time to share their thoughts.

Annual Survey: Member Services

The survey was distributed via e-mail to all C.A.R. REALTORS® and Designated REALTOR® members. A total of 802 members responded. Here are a few highlights:

  • 65% of responding members opted for the multiple payment option regarding last year’s dues and MLS fees payment plan, 35% paid in full.
  • Primary reasons for contacting C.A.R. include dues billing questions (34%), MLS questions (20%), education enrollment (19%) and licensing questions (8%).
  • Members prefer to contact C.A.R. by phone (67%) and e-mail (54%).
  • Of products and services members would like C.A.R. to offer for sale and/or delivery, 64% said lockboxes, 52% said forms, 49% said contracts, 43% said Open House and Sold signs/packages and 41% said riders.

Annual Survey: Education

The survey was distributed via e-mail to all C.A.R. REALTORS® and Designated REALTOR® members. A total of 589 members responded. Here are a few highlights:

  • 46% of survey participants set aside education funds as part of their annual business plans.
  • Top classes members took in the past year are continuing education (55%) and designation courses (16%).
  • C.A.R. members prefer to take classes in the C.A.R. classroom (37%), online (30%) and in live classrooms other than at C.A.R. (18%).
  • The top factors in deciding where and in what format to take a course include proximity to home (67%), prefer live instruction (55%), parking availability (47%), diving distance (33%) and cost of parking (32%).
  • 30% of managing brokers said they set aside education funds as part of their brokerage business plans.

Annual Survey: Communications

The survey was distributed via e-mail to all C.A.R. REALTORS® and Designated REALTOR® members. A total of 478 members responded. Here are a few highlights:

  • The top three reasons people elect C.A.R. as their local real estate board include: educational opportunities (49%), ChicagoREALTOR.com (42%) and urban location (40%).
  • The top services for which people turn to C.A.R. include the MLS (83%), forms and contracts and educational opportunities (57% each), and industry news (24%).
  • The majority of C.A.R. members (51%) get their association news from weekly e-mails; another 23% from ChicagoREALTOR.com.
  • 71% of C.A.R. members prefer reading Chicago REALTOR® magazine in print, as opposed to online.
  • In addition to ChicagoREALTOR.com, C.A.R. members visit industry Web sites for news including MREDLLC.com (68%), REALTOR.com (45%), Crain’s Real Estate Daily (40%), IllinoisREALTOR.com (31%) and REALTOR.org (26%).

Annual Survey: Programs, Services and Member Benefits

The survey was distributed via e-mail to all C.A.R. REALTORS® and Designated REALTOR® members. A total of 438 members responded. Here are a few highlights:

  • The top business specialties represented include traditional residential sales, 74%, and residential distressed properties, 14%. Commercial real estate, property management, investment real estate and appraisal businesses were also represented.
  • The five most important local policy issues to C.A.R. members are taxes, 70%, lending, 50%, city of Chicago fines and fees, 47%, RTLO reform, 43%, and Fair Housing, 37%.
  • 46% have responded to C.A.R. “Calls to Action.”
  • Of member benefits offered through C.A.R. Affiliate Members, those considered most beneficial are technology services (50%), business solutions (32%) and attorneys and home warranty/inspection (24% each).
  • Members would be most likely to use member benefit services including technology services (51%), business solutions (39%) and home warranty/inspection (34).
