Autumn 2020 Foundation Update

“I didn’t know you offered scholarships… had I known, I would’ve applied a long time ago!”
We often hear this sentiment when engaging with members. In those moments, we wish we could shout from the tallest high-rise and say, “YES! This is just one of the many game changing benefits we provide!” Since 2006, the Chicago Association of REALTORS® Foundation has supported current and prospective members with a variety of educational scholarships. From pre-licensing to higher education, advocacy and more, the Foundation provides continuing education support to build members’ desired interests within the industry. Each year, approximately $40,000 is allocated towards scholarships; however, almost half of these funds go unused. Why? Because members don’t apply to take advantage of these opportunities. If you have been eyeing a specific designation, considering post licensing or even looking to pursue higher education, we strongly encourage you to take the time to look into all the available scholarships that can enhance your career. “Not many associations across the country offer benefits like the CAR Foundation. I’m proud to have a passionate Board of Trustees that works so diligently to ensure these opportunities remain available for current and future members of the CAR membership body.” — CAR Foundation Chair Julie Harron, Jameson Sotheby’s International Real Estate In July, the CAR Foundation launched the new Marki Lemons Ryhal Education Advancement Scholarship. This scholarship supports candidates that are seeking to obtain their real estate license OR attend a Historically Black College and University (HBCU). It is applicable only to African American women whose primary residence is in underserved communities within the Chicagoland area.

But It’s Not Just Scholarships…

The Foundation began as a facilitator for scholarships but, in 2013, it expanded to provide grants to local charities. Since then, each year we’ve given over $80,000 in charitable grants to community and housing-based organizations across the city of Chicago. All the organizations the Board of Trustees support provide housing, food and other necessities to many individuals in need. Do you know of a certified 501(c)3 organization in the city of Chicago worthy of our support? Contact Jakeeva Lee, External Affairs Manager, so they can be vetted and possibly awarded a charitable grant!

Mentorship Program

New this year, we’re excited to have launched a mentorship program and have successfully paired 48 mentors with mentees! The CAR Foundation Mentorship Program seeks to provide opportunities for the next generation of industry professionals with hands on knowledge, insights and tools, as well as encourage ethical behavior from REALTOR® to REALTOR®. If you are interested in becoming a CAR mentor or mentee, we would love to welcome you to this program!

So, What’s Next?

With thirteen scholarships and over $40,000 in scholarship funding, $80,000 in charitable giving, a new mentorship program, a virtual Foundation 5K Walk/Run and the Hall of Fame program, the CAR Foundation is making a difference for many in our industry and community. This includes hosting our second annual Giving Tuesday campaign. Typically held the Tuesday after Thanksgiving, Giving Tuesday is a day of national philanthropy. This year’s event will take place on Tuesday, December 1, and our campaign will support ongoing efforts for all scholarships, so mark your calendars!
