In a time where social consciousness is reshaping industries, the real estate sector stands at a critical juncture. The concepts of power and allyship are no longer abstract ideals but essential components of effective leadership and ethical business practices. As REALTORS®, we have a unique opportunity—and responsibility—to leverage our influence to create more equitable and inclusive communities.
The Evolution of Power Dynamics
Traditionally, leadership in real estate has been reflective of those in the dominant power majority; possessing market dominance, financial clout and exclusive networks. However, this narrow definition is rapidly becoming obsolete. Today we see, more and more clearly, that true leadership power lies in the ability to effect positive change, build authentic relationships and elevate others.
Many times, those benefiting from this traditional leadership model have resisted sharing platforms and power out of fear of losing their own place at the table. By not being willing to open up opportunities to those not historically at leadership tables, the system has operated not from a place of strength, but a place of zero sum thinking and fear.
Where I see power getting warped is when the source of that power is fear. This is why, in my opinion, many leaders resist change and cling to outdated power structures. Fear-based leadership, rooted in insecurity, not only stifles innovation but also perpetuates systemic inequities in housing and commercial real estate.
Allyship vs. Abolitionism: Moving Beyond Performative Support
While allyship has become a buzzword in corporate America, it’s crucial to distinguish between performative gestures and meaningful action.
For REALTORS®, this translates to actively dismantling barriers to fair housing, confronting appraisal bias and advocating for equitable development in underserved communities. It means risking short-term profits or comfortable relationships to uphold ethical standards and promote long-term community well-being.
Practical Steps for REALTORS® to Embody Power and Allyship
- Listen to Comprehend, Not Respond: It’s important to know when to close your mouth and listen. Engage with diverse voices in your community, especially those historically marginalized in real estate decisions.
- Confront Personal Biases: Examine your own relationship with privilege and unconscious biases. This self-reflection is essential for authentic allyship and ethical business practices.
- Center Marginalized Voices: Use your platform to amplify underrepresented perspectives in real estate. This could mean recommending diverse colleagues for leadership positions or ensuring inclusive representation at industry events.
- Advocate for Systemic Change: Go beyond individual transactions to push for policy reforms that address housing discrimination and promote equitable development.
- Embrace Discomfort: Growth happens outside our comfort zones. Be willing to have difficult conversations and make tough decisions that challenge the status quo. Allyship matters most when it’s the most uncomfortable—when standing beside someone in need of support means risking blowback from the power structure, not shrinking from it.
The Business Case for Inclusive Leadership
Embracing these principles isn’t just smart business, it’s ethically right, period. As demographics shift and consumers increasingly prioritize social responsibility, REALTORS® who lead with empathy, inclusivity and integrity will gain a competitive edge. They’ll build stronger client relationships, access new markets and contribute to more resilient, vibrant communities.
A Call to Action
The real estate industry has the power to shape the physical and social landscape of our communities. By redefining power dynamics and actively practicing allyship, REALTORS® can be at the forefront of creating a more equitable and prosperous society for all.
As we move forward, let’s challenge ourselves to go beyond surface-level inclusion initiatives. Let’s commit to the hard work of transforming our industry from within, leveraging our collective power to build a real estate landscape that truly serves and advances all members of our communities.
The path forward may be challenging, but we all win when we are all at the table. It’s time for all REALTORS® to lead the way in setting this new standard for power and allyship in action.
