Cook County Treasurer Maria Pappas will conduct the first sale in more than two years of delinquent property taxes. About 36,000 properties are part of this first tax sale, totaling about $163.4 million in unpaid property taxes.
However, of the 36,000 properties, 11,744 owe less than $1,000. These owners will receive a certified mailing informing them that their unpaid taxes are scheduled to be sold, which would put a lien against their properties.
To avoid the sale, those with delinquent taxes can pay off their outstanding taxes and interest before the tax sale takes place on November 5. To see if your taxes are delinquent or to make a payment:
- Visit the Cook County Treasurer’s website.
- Select “Avoid the Tax Sale.”
- Search for your home by using your address or Property Index Number.
