After nearly 20 years of showings, closings, negotiations—and enough coffee to fuel a small town—I’ve learned a lot about real estate and people. Some of it came from textbooks and training, but most of it came from experience, gut instinct and the ability to smile and stay positive.
Here are a few things I know for sure about life and real estate, in no particular order:
- A great REALTOR® changes everything. It’s not just about finding a house—it’s about guiding someone home. That’s a privilege I never take lightly.
- Invest in real estate! Real estate isn’t just about helping others buy and sell. You’re in this business, so build a foundation for long-term financial stability, freedom and legacy.
- Our association is YOUR partner! We want to see you succeed and thrive. The decisions made in the boardroom are always with your best interests in mind. We offer tools, education and events to help you grow, connect and elevate your business.
- Getting involved can change your career. This has been one of the biggest blessings for me. I’ve made connections and found open doors that otherwise would’ve stayed closed. I’ve been part of amazing conversations and opportunities—not just through our association, but also through my NAHREP familia, who have inspired me to think bigger, take risks and build relationships across the country.
- Treat others with kindness, show empathy and help your fellow REALTOR®. We were all new once!
- Your worth is not tied to productivity. We all want to close more deals and reach new goals—but it’s okay for your goals to be personal. Over the years, mine have changed. Some years, I aim to close more deals; other years, I just want to spend the summer in Mexico. Spending time doing what brings you joy is not a waste. Take the trip. Read the book. Life is short.
- Giving back fuels the soul.
- Be prepared for the unexpected. A few years ago, I was traveling in Mexico when my son ended up in the hospital. I had to stay 10 extra days. Thankfully, my business and team were ready. I had already built systems when I took maternity leave and hired an amazing, licensed assistant who can practically run the business alongside the rest of our team. Most recently, I broke my ankle, had surgery and couldn’t walk for weeks—but because we were prepared, it was business as usual. Systems, support and disability insurance made it possible for me to fully recover.
At the end of the day, this business is about people—how we show up for them, and for each other. I’m grateful for the journey, and even more excited for what’s ahead.
