Since the beginning of my career, I’ve had the incredible opportunity to surround myself with industry leaders. For me, it all began in the mid 2000’s when I responded to a Call For Action to help overturn a discriminatory law called House Bill 4050. Seated at the table were inspiring individuals like Frank Williams, Rafael Alvarado, Gaspar Flores Sr., Sonia Anaya, Sandra Rosas, my first managing broker Griselda Ferreira and my now business partner Joe Castillo.
Interacting with these leaders set me on my own leadership journey within the association as a member of the Young Professionals Network Advisory Board, the Chicago REALTORS® Foundation Board of Trustees and the Diversity Committee, The 77, to name just a few.
The connections made as a volunteer are invaluable. I truly love connecting with my peers and sharing knowledge—it makes us all stronger and smarter! This year, I encourage you to take the time to determine what leadership opportunities are right for you—it could be joining a committee, participating in our Leadership Accelerator program or becoming a mentor or mentee.
Getting involved is one of the best ways to gain leadership skills to further yourself in our industry and in our communities. Consider the legendary Frank Williams, a leader in our association who uses his voice in these leadership spaces and works tirelessly with state and national legislators to create more fairness in housing. I also think of our most recent REALTOR® Community Service Award winner Lourdes Fernando who, as a veteran herself, assists her fellow veterans by supporting VA disability benefits, educational opportunities and community engagement.
These are just two inspiring leadership examples!
I see so many more leaders in the Chicago Association of REALTORS® membership. There’s so much we can do to move the real estate industry forward, and also use our expertise and influence to empower the communities we live in; it starts with getting involved.
