A TIMELINE OF ARAB AMERICAN IMMIGRATION

Arab immigration to the United States began in the 1880s, as political tensions grew in the Ottoman Empire and prompted people to seek new opportunities. Immigration slowed in the 1920s when quotas were introduced, then increased again in the 1960s after those limits were lifted. Since then, Arab communities have continued to grow steadily across the country. Click here for a detailed timeline of Arab immigration from History.com.

Explore the Arab American Community in Illinois

According to the U.S. Census, the Illinois Arab American community grew by more than 41% between 2000 and 2008. It has tripled since 1980.

It’s important to note that Arab Americans are not officially recognized as a federal category, which makes population data difficult to track precisely. Estimates for the Arab American population in Chicago vary widely, ranging from about 50,000 to 160,000 based on earlier census data and research, with some estimates reaching as high as 220,000. Other sources place roughly 170,000 Arab Americans within the city itself.

In Illinois, the Arab American population is estimated at around 150,000, making it one of the largest in the country, with most residents living in the Chicagoland area. Many of the more recent immigrants to Illinois have come from countries such as Iraq, Jordan and Syria.
