Treasurer Pappas Increases Time to Pay Delinquent Property Taxes

Illinois passed a new law last week that increases the time to pay delinquent property taxes from nine months to 13 months. According to Cook County Treasurer Maria Pappas, who helped draft the legislation, this will allow more room for homeowners and business people who are struggling to pay. This increase gives individuals more time to pay property taxes before the Annual Tax Sale, which begins the legal process that could end in the loss of property. To avoid the Tax Sale, an owner must pay their taxes and interest before the Sale starts.
